Greenhouse Gases
Why can infra-red radiation get through greenhouse gases on the way in to Earth but not get out?
How does this work, if it can get in one end, how do greenhouse gases keep the heat in the atmosphere to warm the Earth?
It doesn’t. Imagine you were in a crowded rooftop and you had a foam football. Say whoever had the football had the urge to just throw it in a random direction (not up, though). The more crowded the roof is, the more likely you would be to hit someone (and not off the building). The person would take the little football and throw it off in another random direction (probably hitting another person). The more people, the less chance that football finds its way back out of the room.
This may be a good way to think of how a “greenhouse” process works, where people are greenhouse gas molecules, the little foam football is the infrared photon, and the roof is the earth.
