A carbon footprint is a measurement of all the greenhouse gasses that we produce. A simple act of cooking and even our mere exhaling, since we give off carbon dioxide, makes us contributors to the total carbon footprint that our countries emit each day. Daily transportation and factory productions, the likes that use fossil fuel energy add to the carbon emissions.
A carbon footprint can be summed up in two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of carbon dioxide which we have direct control of. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect carbon dioxide emissions from the whole lifecycle of the products that we use. It means that the more we produce products and the more we buy, increases the carbon emissions on our behalf since they have individual carbon footprints as well.
A greenhouse gas emissions assessment measures an individual, a country or a company’s carbon footprint. The size of the footprint enables them to devise a strategy to reduce it. Carbon footprints greatly impact our environment. It is one of the main drivers of global warming. That is why the Kyoto Protocol defines legally binding targets and timetables for cutting the greenhouse gas emissions of certain countries to help curb their carbon footprints.
There are certain ways to reduce carbon footprints. Using alternative energy sources like solar, wind and hydro power, reforestation, better product and by-product management and consumption strategies are some of the ways to curb carbon emissions. This is also known as carbon offsetting.
